On September 4th 2020, Korean Institute of
Criminology hosted the 1st Asia Pacific Expert Conference for
Criminal Justice(APECCJ) with the title “Tasks in Criminal Policy amid the
COVID-19 Pandemic: Evolving Trends in a Changing Landscape” using a web-based
platform.
Experts on criminal justice from Asian
Pacific countries participated in the conference: Matti Joutsen (Special
Advisor, Thailand Institute of Justice), Rick Brown (Deputy Director,
Australian Institute of Criminology), Roderic Broadhurst (Professor of
Criminology, Australian National University), Taegyung Gahng (Deputy Director
of International Cooperation Division, Korean Institute of Criminology), and
Hyejin Kim (Researcher, Police Science Institute, Korean National Police
University).
In the conference the experts presented the
influence of COVID-19 pandemic on face-to-face contacts, online activities, and
crime. The results of a survey and 112 data were also presented to examine changes
in criminal activities, such as domestic violence and cybercrime, and
differences in crime trends across nations. In addition, participants discussed
human rights issues related to use of personal data for the purpose of
quarantine.
